Box 13: Case study - Allen Valleys Folk Festival and the last wolf

The Allen Valleys Folk Festival was established in 2014 through the work of the North Pennines National Landscape team and a group of local volunteers. Funding was secured for four years as part of the Allen Valleys Landscape Partnership Scheme – run by the National Landscape and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. This seed funding and staff support gave the community the space to learn how to run a festival and by 2017 the festival was breaking even and was being run by a newly formed charity – Allen Valleys Community Arts.

The festival has continued to develop with new input from local residents and artists and now features an annual ritual of fire in which the story of the last wolf is told and passed on to future generations.
