How to read this plan
Welcome to the Management Plan for the North Pennines National Landscape and UNESCO Global Geopark, 2026 – 2031.
This plan can be read in a linear fashion by progressing through the tabs in order; you can also go straight to particular areas of interest, from the background through to specific components of natural beauty (e.g. peatlands) or thematic areas like public engagement with nature.
Each of the components of natural beauty or thematic areas has one or more associated outcomes, and a series of suggested measures that, if taken, would lead towards achieving the outcome. Achieving the outcomes collectively is intended to bring about the realisation of the Vision.
In the tables of ‘suggested measures’, there are ‘broad sectoral accountabilities’ for each one – usually for local/national government, conservation bodies, farmers and land managers, businesses and communities. This is a plan for everyone who influences the nature and heritage of the North Pennines, and it is purposefully not overly prescriptive – the suggested measures are presented as valid ways to secure the desired outcomes for people and nature – there will be more, and the plan doesn’t seek to discount other things which contribute to furthering the purpose of conserving and enhancing natural beauty just because they were not explicitly written into this document.
