Geological SSSIs
Information on the area’s 41 geological features within SSSIs in the North Pennines can be found here. 85% of these features are in favourable condition.
There is a need to resurvey many of the features some of which were last surveyed in the late 2000s.
Local geodiversity sites
These 51 local sites includes the suite of sites formerly known as Regionally Important Geological and Geomorphological Sites (RIGS) and sites identified at (e.g.) County level.
North Pennines geodiversity sites
The North Pennines Geodiversity Audit (2004) identifies 94 North Pennines Geodiversity Sites which represent a cross section of typical features of the area’s geoheritage. The condition of these sites has not been comprehensively surveyed since that time and this should be rectified over the life of the plan and necessary conservation measures taken for priority locations (to be defined)
